Call for iPod alternative
After several rounds of fighting against Apple’s iTunes database, we decide to stop following any further variations of the new database format. Instead, we are looking for alternatives of the iPod application on iPhone/iTouch.
Our plan is to provide an open, efficient and easy-to-use solution for obtaining and enjoying video and music on iPhone. The key of the solution is to establish an open, flexible and efficient standard of playlist exchange format, which describes a list of the video and music on iPhone and their associated information such as album title, cover and the year of publish. Such a standard bridges the mediaplayer on iPhone and File browsers on PC/Mac and provides the seamless user experience of copy-and-play of media files in any format. On the other hand, we are open to alternative ideas.
We are calling for collaborations with iPhone developers who are working on mediaplayer/file browser. We are working on a dedicate edition of the ifunbox to convert and transfer media files from PC/Mac to iPhone via high-speed USB connection.

i don’t really like this solution… as good as the player could get (there are some around), it could never replace the ipod app.

Been looking for a solution mentioned in the post ever since I had an Ipod touch. PwnPlayer was ‘ok’ and on the plus side it supports folder browsing + playlist but it was unstable…

I for one, would be happy to see progress made on a third party mobile player that allows a bit more freedom and flexibility…without constant updating and modification by apples team of knob fiddlers.
Remember though, that progress is also being on a port of linux, probably starting with android on the iPhone platform, so media management wise, we may soon have a few more options

itunes 8.2 do not supported and it will be not supported in the future because they tired to fighting with the itunes database format.
As for ipod alternative - its a good idea, but only in case when the basics of the ipod will be realised in the opensource player with the good usability.

And I’m tired of battling the iPhone.
Each and every simple action available eslewhere turns to a pain in the ass. Copying music - what could be simplier? why the need for a monster like itunes?
No usb-storage,non-standart 30-pin cable, no proxy support for emai or IM protocols over wifi, no ad-hoc-wifi, very poor ad2p, ugly filesystem access and insane limitations.
waiting for a suitable MAEMO-based phone for a shift.
No more . I’m out.

As for the download music from iTouch/iPhone it shouldn’t be such a big problem.
Databases are sqlite3 without login/password. Files are just files, only names are changed. Names are in the Library.itdb, local name and directory (in format Fxx/YYYY.mp3) are in the Locations.itdb. Both name and local filename are connected with unique PID.
Maybe you can implement just downloading media files? It would be a great help in doing full backup of iTuoch/iPhone in case of harddisk breakdown. Files restored in that way can be easili reuploaded by iTunes.
The problem with uploading media via iFunBox of course is a lot harder…

PwnPlayer is currently the best player for the iPod Touch/iPhone, and it is now compatible with software version 3. It is fast but lacks the features of the iPod’s built-in player.
If someone were to develop a new player, it would need to (at the least) have:
Playback of MP3s from file system and run in the background
Sort by Album/Artist/Genre (where available) using some sort of database
Be able to change it’s storage directory (and have this change recognized by iFunBox)
Run fast enough and bug-free enough to be useful (so that’s dTunes gone)
But it would be cool if it had some of the features of the v2 version of PwnPlayer such as Lockscreen Gesture Controls as well. Also a skinnable interface would be awesome.
Have you got any replys to your proposal yet?

Now that I think about it, one of the key features would be that it would have to be able to open inside other applications, like the current player can from v3 onwards. Some games have an option for custom music and (naturally) opens the default iPod music player. There would need to be a way to override that function and redirect it to the new player. Otherwise people would have to put all their music on iTunes and the new player, which an 8Gb iPod won’t really like!

Hi,
I am having big problems with your program (no jailbreak used)
I can’t reLY see any files on the IPOD except a few music filed.
Noting can be copied from the PC to th eipod (at least not in a way so that it is visible with th eIPOD)
Is this normal ?

After I use iFunbox to upload a song to my 2.2 iphone, I respring my phone, all the music cannot appear, even I still can see them in iFunbox windows panel.

Just got my iPod touch on saturday and come accross this which is great. I hate iTunes. There is already an app on Cydia called pwnplayer which works beautifully, although I’d fully support another app as that one is in beta and no longer being developed!

im using i funbox version 0.9 and jailbreaked iphone 3gs 3.0.1
there is section of music and video under iphone in this software… accidently i have put one movie .avi format into that section and the problem is dat now my 1gb of space is lost and im unable to see where it is actually now in my iphone .how can i recover dat space???? or to delete dat video…

It will work with 3.0 - but if you use BlackRa1n to JB then you will need to install a file from Cydia to fix it and access the whole filesystem. You also need to upgrade iTunes and iFunbox to their respective latest versions, otherwise you may have two incompatible versions (iFunbox uses iTunes files to connect with the iPod.)

There would need to be a way to override that function and redirect it to the new player. Otherwise people would have to put all their music on iTunes and the new player, which an 8Gb iPod won’t really like!

I am not a code level developer. I just want to say thanks to you guys for making this wonderful program which should have been done by APPLE. It is working perfectly for me so now I don’t really use WinSCP unless i need terminal access. Thanks guys and I hope that this will last!

I think a third party media player capable of easier, less restricting, file transfer (both wifi and usb) would be an amazing application to have. It could also be added upon to incorporate features/plugins: ie. lyrics, news on the artist, touring info… the possibilities are endless. I fully support the direction this is headed in. I convert all my music to AAC using iTunes offline.
I convert DVD’s video whatever to H.264 using xVid4PSP 5.0
I have dTunes. I have iFile. Both are found in Cydia.
I am happy.
